If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a firefighter, the River Falls Fire Department is offering a glimpse of just that by hosting its annual open house from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 30. The fire station is located at 115 North Second St.
Visitors will be allowed to tour the fire station and see the various tools, equipment and fire trucks up close. Displays detailing various procedures and facets of working as a firefighter will be set up inside of the station. In addition, demonstrations will be going on throughout the day. Some of these demonstrations include how to deal with car fires, and vehicle extraction operations using the Jaws of Life.
Throughout the duration of the open house, several firefighters will be available to answer questions as well as run the demonstrations. One of the firefighters will be Fire Chief Scott Nelson. He said that questions are encouraged, as the purpose of the open house is to inform the public about a very crucial aspect of public safety.
Smokey Bear will be in attendance to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention Campaign, which is the longest-running public service campaign in the United States. The campaign’s main objective is educating the public on fire safety and the prevention of wildfires.
