Morgan Wallen Concert Draws 100,000 in Madison

An estimated 100,000 people attended Morgan Wallen’s “I’m the Problem” tour at Camp Randall Stadium, a turnout described as one of the largest in Madison history.

Morgan Wallen, who’s become one of the most popular country music stars of the 2020s, saw a quick rise to fame and a special following throughout the southern and midwestern United States, recently becoming the most actively streamed country music artist on Spotify.

His stop in Madison included a two-night offering, with a total showtime of about five hours. Wallen’s setlist included twenty-six songs, allowing fans to get about two hours of him on stage.

Reports following the weekend called it the largest concert in state history, with potentially 100,000 attendees. Luis Hernandez, associate director for strategic communications at the university, said after the show, “This was the largest concert in Wisconsin history.” The only comparisons drawn were to the state’s 1970 Summerfest concert, which also saw an estimate of 100,000 attendees. Whether Morgan Wallen topped this 50-year standing record is not known for certain.

Some attendees to Saturday’s show say they still remember his appearance on The Voice in 2014. One fan said, “I remember when he was still a baby!”

Miranda Lambert, also known for drawing large crowds, opened for Wallen and helped build a steady build-up to the main event of the night. That same fan commented, “I would’ve come if it was just her.”

Camp Randall Stadium, home of the Badgers, saw a 28-year concert drought come to an end as Wallen took the stage.

Father and son patrons Trent and John Duffie attended Saturday’s show, saying they haven’t felt anything like it before. “We’ve been here every Saturday for the past two and a half years, but never for something like this,” Trent said.

Unfortunately for many fans, the momentum was struck down on Sunday due to a severe thunderstorm in the area. A shelter-in-place instruction was ordered just after 6:30 p.m. due to lightning in the area. Many people stood confused on whether to leave or hang around until the show resumed. After a nearly hour-long delay, Wallen was back on stage and finished the remainder of the show.

With Madison receiving such high revenue and an influx of local engagement during the concert, it seems Camp Randall will be the site of many music events going forward. Next month, Coldplay will debut at the stadium on July 19, serving the 285,000 residents of Madison.

As for Wallen, he’ll be continuing his “I’m the Problem” tour nationwide the rest of the summer.
